My goal is to provide a guide for you. A word of warning There are some really excellent JavaScript people out there.

I'm not one of them. I'm really just the guy I talked about in the previous paragraph. I know a thing or two about developing backend web applications, but I'm still new to "real" JavaScript and still new to Node.

I learned some of the more advanced aspects of JavaScript just recently.

I'm not experienced. Which is why this is no "from novice to expert" book. It's more like "from novice to advanced novice". If I don't fail, then this will be the kind of document I wish I had when starting with Node.

But this is just the context.

JavaScript Tutorials and Courses

It defines what you can do with the language, but it doesn't say much about what the language itself can do. JavaScript is a "complete" language: you can use it in many contexts and achieve everything with it you can achieve with any other "complete" language.

In order to execute the JavaScript you intend to run in the backend, it needs to be interpreted and, well, executed. This is what Node.

Plus, Node. Thus, Node. In order to make use of these, you need to install Node. Instead of repeating the process here, I kindly ask you to visit the official installation page.

Backbone has a small but tight community and Stack answers can be surprisingly helpful. You end up relying on strangers to help you understand detailed topics for free.

This is great and obviously the best place to start—however books are typically the next step when you need to level up your skills. Some devs prefer to start with books because they present learning materials in an orderly fashion. But I can offer the best choices for Backbone books and leave the ball in your court.

First is a free book called Developing Backbone.

Prerequisites for learning JavaScript

The free open source content will always remain free, although you can support the author by downloading a print version if you desire. Anyone who wants to learn Backbone without spending money should check out this book. But there are many other books worth considering. Most of them offer print and eBook options depending on your preferences.

Alternatively you could check out the many books coming from Packt Publishing. Their writers teach in a linear fashion starting from beginner concepts and getting more advanced. For example their introductory book Backbone.
